The Morocco Experience
November 6 - November 19, 2018
What's it like to sip mint tea with Berbers in the Sahara? Meander through the ancient cities of Fez and Marrakech and discover artisan works unchanged for a thousand years? Ride a camel across fire-red sand dunes at sunset? Sleep under the stars in the Sahara? Enjoy a traditional meal with a local Moroccan family? Learn to cook an authentic tagine? See otherworldly scenery that makes you wonder in you’re still on Planet Earth? Stroll on the sublime beaches of the once-Roman village of Essaouira?
Interwoven in this tapestry created over millennia, intricate architecture, ancient culture, historical medina markets and delicious culinary traditions, Morocco is a magic land that transports you back in time.
Morocco sits at a scrumptious crossroads of the culinary world where food is an expression of culture and culture is an expression of history.
Fusing influences from the native Berber traditions with Algerian, Arabic, Spanish and Mediterranean cuisines, Moroccan food is exquisite and boasts huge flavors that reward every palate. Spicy, colorful and intricately flavorful, experiencing a Moroccan meal gathered around the table in an ancient riad or under the desert stars in the Sahara is a transformative experience that fills you with joy and wonder.
Famous for Berber tagine cooking, as well as couscous, olives, soups, salads and many other delicacies, the unifying thread throughout is spices!
Morocco's ras el hanout is a 27-spice mixture — the North African masala — used on beef, goat, mutton and lamb, chicken and seafood.
Morocco's best-kept secret, however, is an amazing wine industry.
The Morocco Experience will explore this unique food culture and in a three-part Experience that will span the country and two weeks time — from November 6 through November 19.
For as long as we can remember, we always dreamed of living in Morocco. And we couldn’t be more grateful that our dream has come true. Everything we’ve experienced every time we’ve lived in Morocco is much more than we imagined. Words could never describe the magic of Morocco. So we’ve put together what we think it’s the perfect Morocco Experience to feature the best culinary experiences and enchanting scenery Morocco has to offer.
The first part of this three-part experience begins in Fez. We’ll explore the food, the medina, the arts and crafts and, of course, visit with some of our friends there. We’ll have a cooking expedition followed by a cooking class. We’ll do some wine tasting and picnic among ancient Roman Ruins! We’ll take a day trip to one of the most beautiful villages in Morocco. The blue village of Chefchaouen is an enchanting village where all the houses are painted blue. There will be lots more but I have to keep some surprises for you.
After our explorations in Fez and surrounding areas, for the second part our journey will take us in a small caravan of friends for a drive of about 8 to 10 hours with a few stops to take pictures and enjoy a meal. We’ll traverse the vast and awe-inspiring diverse lands as we head to meet our friend and his camels to take us for a magical night in the Sahara Desert among the majestic red sand dunes. We’ll continue from the desert to see some incredible gorges, villages and some ancient famous kasbahs. Tinghir and Ait Ben Haddou are definitely part of the itinerary.
Eventually, we’ll arrive in Marrakech, where we’ll enjoy some amazing surprises including soirees, sunsets, magical meals under the stars and a visit to our friend’s farm -- the first and largest organic farm in Morocco! (We may even harvest saffron and make olive oil, mother nature permitting!)
Our third and last segment of our Morocco Caravan Experience will take us to the Atlantic Coast! We’ll get to enjoy some surf and turf as we leisurely unwind and get some restorative Atlantic Ocean air. We’ll be staying on or around Essaouira eating plenty of freshly caught seafood. We’ll also visit a farm to explore the world of argan oil, the so called "liquid gold" that comes from the argan tree (which grows only in Morocco)!
Typical of our gastronomad experiences, we won't tell you everything we'll do — every day will be filled with surprises. We’re a group of friends and future friends coming together for the adventure of a lifetime!
The cost includes all lodging, food, drinks and transportation during the experience. (Airfare and airport transfer not included.)
