Our Gastronomad Mexico City Experience takes place March 26 - March 31, 2019 — six days and five nights of spicy and spectacular foodie fun and cultural revelry.
Built over what used to be the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan, the center of the Aztec empire, Mexico City emerged as the capital of New Spain under the Spanish Empire. Mexican cuisine is about Aztec and native foods, Spanish and European foods — and the glorious fusion of the two, perfected over several centuries.
Today, Mexico City is endowed with ancient ruins, lush parks, magnificent churches, some of the world's greatest book shops, 145 museums, more than 100 art galleries and around 30 concert halls.
(Unlike major European cultural centers, very little English is written or spoken in Mexico City. The good news is that Amira is fluent in Spanish.)
And if you think you know what Mexican food is all about, think again! This astonishing country originated some of the world's greatest food crops -- chocolate, vanilla, corn, avocados, tomatoes, chili peppers and so many others. And while these popular foods have gone global, the most creative and delicious uses of them still happen in their nation of origin. Mexico is gastronomad heaven, and in Mexico City all that delicious food culture is concentrated and perfected.
Every region of Mexico has it's own unique food culture, and exquisite representations of foods from all 31 states are deliciously represented in Mexico City. You'll also find some of the freshest seafood — the La Nueva Viga Market is the second largest fish market in the world. Mexico City is legendary for its street food, fêted for a new generation of posh restaurants on the list of the World's 50 Best Restaurants and loved for everything in between.
You'll picnic on slow-moving boats along canals built by the Aztecs, discover some of North America's most incredible restaurants, hear from the masters how pulque and Mescal are made in special tastings, learn how to make some of the most delicious Mexican dishes imaginable and visit with some skilled local and traditional artisans.
We'll learn about the history and food culture of Mexico firsthand, and understand the vast differences between regional Mexican cuisines. We’ll get plenty of true Mexican music, the kind that really touches your soul.
