The future is flexible

September 19, 2018

Millennials work so they can travel, according to a new survey.

Some 60 percent of millennials surveyed say that, after the ability to buy basic necessities, travel is the main reason they get up every morning and go to work. (The data comes from Flexjobs, which surveyed 3,000 workers.)

Interestingly, just 44% of older workers say they work in order to be able to travel.

Another interesting point from the survey compares attitudes about workplace flexibility. Some 78% of millennials say a flexible work options — the ability to work remotely some or all of the time — make them more loyal to employers; 71% of older employees say the same.

Cultural change mainly happens through generational turn-over. In the workplace, older workers with one set of attitudes retires each year, and every year a new generation of young workers with a different set of attitudes enters it.

What's interesting is the trend. Over time, the importance of both travel and flex work are growing.

The demands for Gastronomadic living are on the rise. With each passing year, more workers want more travel, more flex time and, in essence, the ability to travel and work at the same time, at least for part of the year.

Today, the ability for people to travel more can be limited to a relatively small number of professions. But over time, thanks to changing attitudes and demands on the part of the workforce, and technology, that option will only grow.

The future is flexible.
